Had a Cooper version of the Clubman as a loan car last week whilst mine was in getting the heating sorted out.
What can I say, Firstly you have to be a dwarf to enter the rear of the car via the suicide door as even with the seat fully forward there is little room. I felt that the car was a little slower through the gears and the fuel computer was indicating some 10MPG less than my current vehicle. I was disapointed with the boot space, obviously larger than the normal Mini but nothing to get too excited about and when opening the rear doors alot of space is lost due to the hinge mechanisms.
What does everyone else think about them?, not for me Im afraid.... |

I saw this when it was first posted & was going to come back & post on here later and forgot! Anyway I really like the Clubman and think they look good. I went for a test drive in a Cooper D Clubman during the launch week and was impressed. The pick up of the diesel's not quite as quick as i was expecting and its quite noisy at idle & low speed but refined when you're up to speed. They handle well, with the longer wheel base and a bit more weight over the rear axle it felt more balanced when cornering quickly but still had the feel of a MINI. I can't remember what the fuel comsumption was showing as. From my experience working at a dealership, the fuel consumption on demo cars isn't likely to be an accurate representation of what you'd get though, because they're usually driven harder and do lots of short journeys to be moved around the forecourt etc.
I think the suicide/'club' door is quite useful as it improves access to the back seat and is handy if you've got a bag or jacket with you to put on the back seat rather than trying to get into the car with it then twist round to put it down. Andy, when you said you have to be a dwarf to get in the club door did you have the front seat folded forwards, because you're still meant to do this to get in? I find its not often I'm parked at the side of a road when letting people out of the back, its usually on a driveway or in a car park so it doesn't make much difference being on the driver's side. For parents getting small children out on the road side it'd be a problem though. I didn't notice the driver's seat belt being a problem getting in and out of the back either. Having a third rear seat I'd find handy as well.
The boot space looks deceptively small with the flexible boot floor in place, but when that's removed its getting on for twice the size of the hatch's. I'm planning on getting a Clubman at some point because I do windsurfing, jetskiing, kitebugging etc and the extra space would be useful with the amount of kit I carry around which is a problem with mine trying to get the stuff in. _________________

lol, Yeah I did go on a bit!
I think it was mainly for the American market so the door would be on the pavement side for them, and it would be too expensive to move the door to the other side for the UK because it would require tooling to produce a full new set of body panels and it would make it harder for the production line _________________

But why only put the club door on one side? is the fuel tank in the way on the other side?? |
Just realised I read that wrong, it's just on one side because it'd be too expensive to design and produce with the doors on both sides so it would have put the price of it up. _________________

you may find there are a few posts missing in the whole forum we had to remove some members because of their attitude to other members. _________________
